My Sunshine…Vitamin D3

A Vitamin D3 Kind Of Day!
A Vitamin D3 Kind Of Day!

Good evening everyone. I am inspired to talk about another important vitamin this evening just because we have seen the sun for about 4 days in a row, which must be a record for us, and it is one of the first vitamins I had incorporated to my regular morning ritual…Vitamin D3.

Where Did The Sunshine Go??
Where Did The Sunshine Go??

I’m going to put in a picture right now because I just wrote the above paragraph about 20 minutes ago about the sun, and since then I went to do some quick chores, answer a few texts and guess what is happening outside…we are about to get a thunderstorm!! Oh my well I guess it just reiterates the importance of the vitamin we are about to have a little chat about.

******************************************************************************************

So in the beginning, Vitamin D kind of puzzled me, because I had always heard it just called as Vitamin D, but then I was told to take D3, so what was the difference? Well when someone talks about Vitamin D they mean D3, its just that years ago to save confusion it was just called Vitamin D.

There are actually 7 strains of Vitamin D, but 2 of those strains are the ones that are found in our food supply, D2 and D3.  D5 is a synthetic D, and only used medically, but is not yet found as a capsule or tablet. It is a analogue of D3, but is not from a food source, analogue meaning, scientist have taken D3 and have changed a few things to it. As for Vitamin D4, D6 and D7 they are also analogues of D3 and are only in the laboratory trying to find ways to make them less toxic for further research for cancer.

D3… the one we all take in supplemental form (also known as Vitamin D) is extracted from cod liver oil (or mackerel, a fatty fish, the good fat) or lanolin, (grease from animal, usually sheep’s fur). When you actually say what lanolin is, it makes you cringe, but there is a process to make sure everything is purified, so it’s not like your out licking the sheep at the petting zoo, lol. Lanolin is usually found in cream forms, so Vit D3 can be absorbed through the skin. Most cases vitamin D/D3 is taken from a fatty fish, cod or mackerel, when taken as a supplement.

The second strain, which we don’t hear much about, is not a vitamin that is naturally found in our body. It is from fungus and is more commonly known, as the vegetarian Vitamin D, mainly found in mushrooms. Anytime a health professional refers you to vitamin D, they are optimally giving you vitamin D3.

Vitamin D3 has both vitamin and hormone properties. It is the vitamin referred to as the sunshine vitamin because vitamin D from the sun is converted twice within our body. First in our liver, then in our kidneys, so then it can be used in many different chemical transmissions (hormones) in our body. Those who have dark skin tones are more deficient in vitamin D because they don’t absorb vitamin D as easily as a lighter pigmented skin toned person might.

D3 is known to help with over 2000 chemical reactions in our bodies. Anything from helping our immune systems with colds and flus, right to the big daddy, Cancer. D3 helps with mental illnesses, headaches/migraines, thyroidism, depression, anxiety, seasonal disorder, mood swings, schizophrenia, reduce inflammation, bi-polar disorders, osteoporosis, reduce allergies, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, asthma, heart disease, skin irruptions, eczema, psoriasis and autoimmune diseases.

Most times our food supply is inadequate in providing the levels we need of Vitamin D, so it is always best to supplement as well. Especially those who work indoors, the elderly, those who live in areas with less sunlight, those of darker skin and anyone suffering from the above reasons to take Vitamin D.

Too much vitamin D is not good, and not enough, is not good. You can ask for a blood test to check your level of vitamin D, but most cases anyone can take at least 400IU’s of Vitamin D3 and be on the lower scale of taking vitamin D still. Some people require much higher amounts of vitamin D like myself, I take 2,000IU of Vit D3 everyday to help with my migraines. My magnesium, Complex Super B vitamin and D3 are my go to migraine meds for daily maintenance. Sure beats codeine any day!

Too much vitamin D, which is in crazy amounts above 10,000IU/day or more, could cause; vomiting and nausea, loss of appetite, weakness, fatigue, headache, dry mouth, a metallic taste, vertigo, and ringing of the ears. Anyone in this category, is definitely being monitored by their doctor.

As for the rest of us, we can supplement by either taking a supplement 200-400IU/day, try to get 10-20 minutes of sunlight in everyday, or find vitamin D in our foods. Such foods for D3 would be dairy, eggs, fatty saltwater fish such as mackerel, and fish liver oils, such as cod liver oils. Vitamin D can also be found in halibut, milk, oatmeal, salmon, sardines, and tuna. Vitamin D2 can be found in mushrooms and some vegetable oils.

While we are on the topic of taking Vitamin D in fish and fish oils, its hard to not comment on the good omega 3’s you will also be getting as well, which is another fabulous fat for the brain!

I do find my D3 very beneficial for migraine relief, and from it, I also feel more energized, along with as mentioned, my magnesium and Vit B’s. It is my go to ritual first thing every morning with my breakfast. And as I have mentioned in previous blogs, now with my 2 sprays; Vit B12 and Vit D3, my migraine toolbox is growing. I much more prefer to take as much natural rememdies as I can.

I do appreciate my prescription medications, and I know without them I would not be here chatting with you, but I would rather take more vitamins to help keep down on my prescriptions, then keep increasing my prescriptions and only hurt myself in other areas.

The vitamins have to be taken in mass amounts to be toxic and most cases they do not build up causing toxicity at all. I have found that since incorporating the vitamins, I have helped my brain, liver, stomach and digestive track, that would only have been further impacted by the increase in prescription medications. That is why it is soo important, that if you are taking prescription medications, that you also supplement with vitamins in order to keep all your organs running smoothly. Most prescription medications take away our vitamins causing further illness, and that is the opposite of what we want to happen.

Well I’m off to watch a movie with my little one, so I hope you have a wonderful evening and

Happy Healing!!!
